Grantley Adams International Airport, located in the southern part of Barbados, is the island`s only international airport and the most important transportation hub on Barbados. The airport is located approximately 20 kilometers from Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, and approximately 60 kilometers from Amarana.
Originally built in 1936 as Bangor Airport, the airport was renamed Grantley Adams International Airport in 1940 in honor of Grantley Adams, the first Prime Minister of Barbados. The airport has a main terminal, an international terminal, a domestic terminal, and a cargo terminal. The airport has two runways, one of which is 3,048 meters long and can accommodate large passenger aircraft.
With a capacity of over 2 million passengers per year, the airport is one of the most important airports in the Caribbean and one of the most important in the Commonwealth. The airport is served by a number of airlines, including United Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Spanair, Swedavia, KLM and others. The airport also offers a variety of services, including shopping, dining, banking, currency exchange, car rental, travel agencies, and post offices.
