The history of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport dates back to the 1930s. As a key component of the national "One Belt, One Road" initiative and the "Silk Road in the Air", the airport has always been an important international aviation hub for China's aviation industry and a core hub airport for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Since its relocation to its current location in 2004, Baiyun Airport has experienced rapid business development and has continued to improve its hardware and facilities to continue to promote the development of an international aviation hub.
As of 2019, Baiyun Airport's annual passenger throughput has exceeded 73 million, with nearly 500,000 flight movements. From this airport, the route network covers more than 230 access points around the world, with nearly 80 airlines operating here. Guangzhou has formed a 4-hour air traffic circle with major cities in China and Southeast Asia, and a 12-hour air traffic circle with major cities around the world.
Under the special circumstances of the 2020 global outbreak of Crown Pneumonia, Baiyun Airport performed well, transporting 43.768 million passengers, making it one of the fastest recovering airports in the world in terms of passenger traffic. Baiyun Airport stood out and ranked first in the Airports Council International (ACI) 2020 Global Airport Service Quality Passenger Satisfaction Measurement, achieving the remarkable achievement of being the world's No. 1 airport in terms of "quality" and "quantity".
In 2021, Baiyun Airport continued its outstanding performance, completing 362,000 flight movements and transporting 40,257,000 passengers, and once again ranked first among domestic airports in terms of annual passenger throughput. Meanwhile, cargo and mail throughput also hit a record high of 2.045 million tons, with international and regional cargo and mail throughput increasing by more than 20% year-on-year. This series of results demonstrates Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport's outstanding position in the global aviation industry and its continued momentum.
