The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit-making organization of local Chinese firms and businessmen. Founded in 1900, it is one of the oldest and largest chambers of commerce in Hong Kong. At present, the Chamber has a membership of over 6,000, comprising association, company and individual members. Members` businesses cover a wide spectrum of commercial and industrial activities in the territory, including manufacturing, imports and exports, banking, insurance, real estates, building and construction, information technology, professional services, transport and communication, foods, retail and wholesale, catering and tourism, etc.
Ever since its establishment, the Chamber aims at serving the community and advancing with time. It provides the business community a forum for the exchange of business information and an avenue for fostering regional and international communication and promoting trade and commerce. The Chamber maintains close contacts with trade associations and Chinese chambers all over the world, in particular those in Mainland China. It has been playing an active role in promoting external trade and attracting foreign investment in the Mainland. To support China`s open door policy, the Chamber has been organizing Training Courses for senior officials and executives from the Mainland since 1982.
Being the voice of local businessmen, the Chamber actively involves itself in social affairs. The Chamber has representatives in the Legislative Council, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau, and Education and Manpower Bureau. It is also represented on a number of boards and committees of various public and private bodies, including the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the ICAC, the Hong Kong Food Council, the Hong Kong Shippers` Council, as well as the Manpower Development Committee and the Labour Advisory Board in the SAR government. Moreover, frequent dialogue is maintained with various government departments and the Chamber`s views on all government policies related to business are often sought. The Chamber has been strongly supporting the HKSAR government in all respects. It also devotes itself to contribute towards Hong Kong`s stability, prosperity, and the implementation of "One Country Two Systems", "Hong Kong People Running Hong Kong".
