The train journey between beautiful Flåm, nestled furthest in the Aurlandsfjord, and the alpine station of Myrdal on the Bergen Railway, is a stretch of railroad unlike no other in Europe. It is 20 kilometres long, with a climb of 865 meter and has a gradient of up to 1:18. This steep gradient is unique for a standard gauge railway. To enable the railway to climb high enough, the track has been partially laid in a tunnel that spirals in and out of the mountain.
The journey through the steep and narrow Flåmsdalen valley, with a marvellous view over waterfalls and majestic mountains, takes around 60 minutes. The train slows or stops at the most spectacular viewpoints. Trains travelling to and from Flåm correspond in Myrdal with most of the daily trains between Oslo and Bergen.
